So You Are A Model
Work Better With These 10 Great Tips
by Daniel Moncur-Sime, 28-06-2008
Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder
...And You Can Certainly Influence It!
Everyone loves a model - you are so beautiful, it must be so easy earning money just on your looks. How many times have you heard that one? Follow these simple tips and soon you could be so good to work with you’ll never be forgotten. Once you start to stick in people’s minds you’ll be asked back – even for more test and personal shoots (which are always good experience). Also continuing to do these things listed will spill over into your everyday life and improve things everywhere. People will look on and want to model themselves on you – now that’s adoration!
- Practice.
- Anywhere. In your bedroom, whilst cooking, in front of the mirror (especially this one!). Walk around your house, stand up straight and learn good posture. Perfect the catwalk and perfect the technique and skill to walking and moving in high heels – 90% of people can’t walk properly. Move your face; smile, frown, cry, laugh, pout, stun and impress!
- Be the person you want to present.
- If you feel you want to be a fitness model then get into the gym. Learn your uniqueness and nurture it. But be nice in the process, to yourself and others. If you love hard rock music and concerts, let that ‘strength’ come out for the photographer.
- Only do things that’ll make you feel confident about yourself.
- This is so important. Confidence shines and you won’t feel silly doing what other people think of as silly things – these are all just great experiences to have as a model so enjoy it. They will look at you and wonder ‘how do they do that?’ It’s such a feeling of well being and empowerment.
- Understand negativity and let it be like water off a duck’s back.
- Others will put you down but they are only expressing jealousy. Art is fickle and models can be shallow (but not all are) and everyone is worried about losing their place to someone else. Don’t be like that – there is plenty of work, money, happiness and everything you want, so always, always, always be positive.
- Look after yourself.
- No one likes working with someone who is worn out and run down. Get proper sleep, drink plenty of water, supplement your food with a full range of vitamins and minerals, get some exercise. Smile and be happy as much as you can.
- You are what you eat.
- The days of forcing yourself to be a super waif are over. Now you can be a healthy glowing model epitomising beauty all the way through your body. If you want good skin then you have to feed it so learn about how your body works and what it needs.
- Be creative.
- Ideas are the stuff of success and there is no such thing as a bad idea in art. This will show that you are capable of thinking about things, are confident enough to put it forward, are able to stand up and be counted as part of the creative team. After all you are 50% of the image and the other 50% is the photographer, make up artist, hairdresser etc. So if you have an idea in a shoot then put it forward, however my disclaimer here is don’t rub someone up the wrong way if they are a control freak as it could be your pay cheque that gets hurt at the end).
- Try different things to build your portfolio.
- Good artists never stop doing different things and this applies to models as well. Re-style your hair, spray your body, get a fake tattoo, try a goth look, what about punk, or at a skate park, outside with water, cover yourself in glitter, do underwear (it really doesn’t matter what you feel about yourself – there is a big movement to display ‘real’ people, lumps, bumps, warts and all, so don’t worry too much about yourself – nature doesn’t make anything imperfect!) In fact do anything that'll set you apart from the crowd.
- Sign a model release form.
- You don’t want to be caught out when the client can’t use the photos from your shoot because the photographer forgot to get you to sign a release form for the photos he took of you.
- Get photos from the shoot as soon as possible.
- Agencies, photographers and creative people love to see the latest stuff you’ve done. Modeling is visual so it’s great to see all the different stuff you’ve done and are capable of doing, especially your latest looks. Put them in your portfolio, print them, email them, get them to photographers and agencies, designers and magazines… you never know who’s looking.
I hope you’ve found this helpful and you can probably come up with a few more but in my humble opinion these are the major things to consider when being a model. As a photographer I’ve encountered many problems with photography shoots working with models and I keep wanting to go back to the models that I’ve been successful with. It takes two to tango so enjoy the time you have creating amazing show-stopping imagery - it’ll be an irreplaceable feeling and experience. Have fun and enjoy!
